Literacy Interactions:

• Select a recipe for a cooking or snack preparation project. Collect the ingredients, keeping them in their original containers. Introduce ingredients in original containers. Discuss the name of each ingredient, its identifying print, and so on (see Recipe Books on page 53 for ideas). Identify the ingredients that are conducive to counting, such as chocolate chips or marshmallows. Invite children to estimate how many (or how many spoonfuls) of each ingredient is needed to equal the specified measurement in a recipe. For example, “How many chocolate chips will it take to fill this 1⁄2 cup?” Document their responses next to the listed ingredient on chart paper. Encourage the children to assist in counting the ingredient into the measuring tool to check their estimates. Prepare the recipe and enjoy!

• Locate and read various labeled packaged print items in lunches or snacks. Ask children to make estimates and then count how many items are in the package as they eat. For example, “How many chips are in your (brand name) bag?” Document responses by saving clean product containers and taping them to chart paper next to the counted amounts in each. Use this activity to compare the relationship of the size of the product containers to the size and number of contents counted.
